Vedanta Aluminium Appoints David Stone as CEO of Coal Mines

Vedanta Aluminium has appointed David Stone as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its coal mines. In this role, Stone will oversee the company’s coal mining operations, focusing on driving strategy, innovation, and technology to enhance resource efficiency and sustainable mining practices. His leadership will be pivotal in optimizing the thermal power plants in Jharsuguda and Lanjigarh (Odisha) and Korba (Chhattisgarh).

The company currently operates five coal mines with a combined production capacity of 40 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). This backward integration aims to secure a steady coal supply and reduce production costs, aligning with Vedanta Aluminium’s broader growth and expansion objectives.

John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, expressed confidence in Stone’s ability to lead the mining operations: “His proven track record makes him the ideal leader to drive our mining operations, ensuring backward integration to secure raw material and reduce cost of production for our business.”

David Stone brings with him extensive experience from his previous tenures with Anglo American, Xstrata, and Glencore, where he held key leadership roles in growth phases, mergers and acquisitions, project development, and the seamless management of operations.

As India’s leading aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium manufactured 2.37 million tonnes of aluminium in FY24, and Stone’s appointment aligns with the company’s ambitions to further strengthen its operational efficiency while advancing its sustainability goals.
