CMO Todd Kaplan Departs PepsiCo After 17 Years, Leaves Legacy of Innovation and Growth

After nearly two decades at PepsiCo, Todd Kaplan, Chief Marketing Officer, has announced his departure from the company to pursue an external opportunity. In a LinkedIn post, Kaplan reflected on his extensive career at PepsiCo, where he joined as an MBA intern in 2006. Over the years, he has held various roles, including assistant marketing manager, marketing director for Mountain Dew, and senior director for global innovation, insights, and incubation brands.

Kaplan’s career at PepsiCo has been marked by significant achievements. As vice-president of marketing for the water portfolio, he launched the Bubly sparkling water range and the premium Lifewtr brand, while also expanding Aquafina. In 2022, Kaplan was named CMO, where he led Pepsi’s first rebrand in 14 years, introducing a new logo and visual identity. His leadership played a crucial role in driving brand distinction and positioning Pepsi for success in an increasingly digital world.

Under Kaplan’s tenure, Pepsi experienced a resurgence in sales after more than a decade of stagnation. He accelerated the growth of Pepsi Zero Sugar and expanded the Bubly Sparkling Water portfolio. Kaplan’s focus on improving relationships with agencies through his “collaborativity” approach resulted in successful campaigns, such as ‘Hidden Logos,’ which significantly boosted brand consideration.

Kaplan has expressed excitement for his next venture, eager to tackle new challenges and explore new possibilities. His departure leaves PepsiCo’s $11.5 billion US cola, root beer, and sparkling water brands in the hands of a yet-to-be-announced replacement. Despite not disclosing his next opportunity, Kaplan shared his enthusiasm for learning a completely new business and applying his talents in different ways.

Reflecting on his time at PepsiCo, Kaplan highlighted the privilege of working with amazing teams, creating and launching new brands, and pushing the boundaries of creativity. As he embarks on his next chapter, Kaplan leaves a legacy of innovation and growth, having significantly impacted PepsiCo’s brand and market presence.
