Dr. Anasuya Roy’s Innovative Copper Technology Revolutionizes Microbial Protection

Dr. Anasuya Roy, leveraging her extensive research in polymer nanotechnology at IIT Delhi, has pioneered a groundbreaking antimicrobial active copper technology. This innovation, developed in collaboration with her PhD supervisor Professor Mangala Joshi, is now the cornerstone of her company, Nanosafe Solutions. The company aims to curb India’s reliance on imported antimicrobial products by providing homegrown, effective solutions.

Recognizing the potential of her research, Dr. Roy founded Nanosafe Solutions during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s initial product, the NSafe mask, became a significant success, showcasing the effectiveness of her patented technology. This fabric-based antimicrobial mask addressed the urgent need for protective gear, reducing dependency on imported masks.

Dr. Roy’s journey into entrepreneurship was driven by a desire to apply her academic research to real-world challenges. She holds an MTech in Fibre Science and Technology from IIT Delhi and pursued her PhD in the same institution from 2014 to 2019. Her research focused on developing antimicrobial materials, particularly those using copper nanoparticles, known for their safe and sustainable properties.

Nanosafe Solutions’ active copper technology has since found applications across various industries, including polymers, textiles, coatings, steel bottles, water tanks, construction chemicals, mattresses, leather upholstery, and the automobile sector. To date, the company has created 40 products using this technology.

A significant boost to Nanosafe Solutions’ mission came with the successful closure of their first funding round, securing Rs 3.13 crore from the Indian Angel Network and IIM Lucknow. This funding will further their goal of making India self-reliant in niche material science products.

Dr. Roy’s innovative technology is based on the traditional Indian practice of using copper for its purifying properties. Nanosafe’s patented active copper technology effectively combats bacteria, viruses, fungi, and algae, making it unique in its comprehensive microbial protection. Unlike nano silver, which can be toxic for human consumption, copper is a safe, sustainable, and essential micronutrient.

Dr. Roy’s dedication to transforming her research into practical applications exemplifies her commitment to innovation and self-reliance. Through Nanosafe Solutions, she continues to make significant strides in providing effective antimicrobial solutions, contributing to India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
