During his tenure as Chief of the Army Staff, General Manoj M. Naravane (Retd) was deeply involved in high-level national security negotiations, demonstrating exceptional expertise in strategic decision-making and defence diplomacy. Under his firm and visionary leadership, the Indian Army adopted a resolute and assertive posture along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), effectively countering the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and safeguarding India’s territorial integrity during a period of heightened tension.
A veteran of the Sikh Light Infantry, General Manoj M. Naravane (Retd) has commanded critical operations across India’s most sensitive frontiers, including the Western, Northeastern and Northern borders. His career also spans international diplomacy and peacekeeping, having served as Defence Adviser in Myanmar and led military delegations to over a dozen countries. Beyond operational leadership, he has contributed significantly to defence reforms, counter-terrorism strategies and military modernisation through public lectures, academic papers and keynote addresses at global platforms such as the Raisina Dialogue, RUSI London and the USIP-IGF in Washington.
An accomplished academic and mentor, General Manoj M. Naravane (Retd) served as a faculty member at the Army War College, Mhow, where he guided senior officers through M.Phil. research in strategic and military studies. He was also a driving force behind multiple ‘Make in India’ capital procurement initiatives under the Army’s Emergency Powers, enabling projects worth over ₹11,000 crore and significantly strengthening indigenous defence capabilities. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the historic induction of female cadets into the National Defence Academy (NDA), marking a major milestone for gender equality in the armed forces.
